. The Rector's Warden's office goes back to the Church of England. The name "Vestry" was originally used in England for the room in or attached to a church in which the vestments, vessels, and other items for public worship are kept and in which the clergy put on the vestments before the worship service begins. From the fact that it was in this vesting room that parishioners met to transact the business of the parish, the word came to be used both for the body of parishioners and the actual meeting. "In the Protestant Episcopal Church of the U.S.A., every parish has a "vestry", consisting of the rector, two wardens, and a number of "vestrymen". This vestry is responsible for the financial administration of the parish." (The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church, page 1415).
The Rector's Warden and the Accounting Warden are lay officers in the various national Churches of the Anglican Communion. "Since early medieval times in England, church wardens (usually two) have been appointed in every parish to take care of the temporalities. Though the rector has control of the church edifice and its appurtenances, the wardens are responsible for its repair and for providing the furnishings necessary for the performance of divine service. They are also required to maintain order in the church and churchyard." Until the nineteenth century, they had the power to make arrests! (Encyclopedic Dictionary of Religion, Volume I, page 790).
